Technically im still studying as im doing a PhD but it is just like a job, ive been doing this for 3 years now! but im still young, ive been studying marine biology for 7 year

Ive wanted to be a marine biologist from around the age of 7, really to start off with i wanted to be a dolphin trainer, but i soon learned that seaworld etc are pretty cruel places and id much rather work with the animals in the wild.

I finished studying my PhD about 4 years ago. So 4 years, although I did take a bit of time out to start a company (which I do in the evening). This is not always the job I wanted to do, I didn’t even know this type of job existed! I didn’t really know what I wanted to be when I was young. I sometimes think adults shouldn’t always ask this question. The whole point of being young is that you don’t have to know what you are doing to do – you really are still free to do most things.

I have been doing this job over a decade now and this is EXACTLY the thing I wanted to do: be a scientist and find out if there is anyone out there. But what I discovered is that, I find joy not only in doing my work but I get immense pleasure when I talk with people about my work and see when *they* get excited. How many professions are like that ? 🙂

I have been a PhD student for about 4 years now. I’ve enjoyed this research but also look forward to doing something new. With research you are always having to keep up to date with what’s known, current and in demand at the time. This means that what you are looking into has to evolve or change over the years. This is something I love about what I do but I know its not for everyone.

I always knew I would be a scientist but I never knew what sort. I naturally followed the path from doing things that I enjoyed.
