Its not so much at what pH can the stomach not cope, its more the stomachs ability to counter balance the acid. The stomach can withstand acid because it secretes bicarbonate, an alkali, which netralises the acid. The continuous production of bicarbonate ensures the stomach is not burned. However there can be stomach disorders which reduce this ability leading to the formation of ulcers in the stomach which are the result of acid burns.

There is a bacteria which can damage the cells in the stomach which produce the bicarbonate, Helicobacter pylori, these can lead to severe stomach ulcerations and has been linked to stomach cancer!
