When certain bacteriophage (a virus that infects bacteria) invades a host it inserts its own DNA into the DNA of the host. In order to do this the bacteriophage has to express a protein called integrase. My research looks into how one type of integrase works.

We are doing this as the integrase could be used for other things. For example it could be used to replace bad genes with good ones in medicine. Or used to make new genes to produce new chemicals. But first we have to undertstand as much about the integrase protein as possible.
