Thanks for your question! I worried about this when I started out in science too… Fortunately, the answer turned out to be that science is a great career for a social life! Most scientists I’ve met tend to “work hard play hard”, so focus on the lab but enjoy a party too. Science offers loads of opportunities to meet people of different ages in the lab, and tons of chances to travel, explore the world and meet people from loads of different backgrounds, which is brilliant. Definitely recommend it as a career which gives you time for a real life too 🙂
I have a great social life, my motto is i work to live, not live to work! for example last weekend i was partying on a boat on the Thames at a masquerade ball, the week before i was scuba diving.
A lot of the things i like to do are similar to my work though, i love wildlife photography and i go to lots of science talks. A lot of my friends are also marine biologists or ecologists so we have that in common, although i have lots of friends who hate science and dont know anything about what i do. its nice to have a mix of both!
